Description

Savor the luscious sights and tastes of the foods of Spain with these note cards featuring four delectable still-life paintings by Luis Meléndez (1715–1780). Each note card has one of four mouthwatering recipes on the back.

Meléndez was the premier still-life painter of eighteenth-century Spain and ranks as one of the greatest painters of the genre in all Europe. He excelled in rendering everyday objects with exacting detail and created marvelous effects of color and light as well as subtle variations of texture. In 2000, the National Gallery of Art proudly acquired Still Life with Figs and Bread (c. 1770). This exquisite painting will be featured in our current exhibition of some 30 canvases as well as in this recipe note card set.

12 note cards and envelopes, 3 each of 4 images: Still Life with Bread, Ham, Cheese, and Vegetables, c.1770; Still Life with Oranges, Jars, and Boxes of Sweets, c. 1760-65; Still Life with Melon and Pears, c. 1770; Still Life with Figs and Bread, c. 1770.

Each card features a recipe inspired by Spanish cuisine: Fennel with Oranges and Olives; Salad of Melon, Pear, Artichoke, and Chorizo; Figs with Blue Cheese and Almond Praline; and Cheese, Figs, and Ham.
