About the Artist

Peter Flötner (1485–1547) was a goldsmith and an important designer of ornament in Nuremberg, a great center for the production of decorative metalwork in the early 16th century. He is credited with being one of the first artists to introduce Italian Renaissance styles of ornament to Northern Europe.

Based on a woodcut in the Gallery's collation by German artist Peter Flötner, the 2015 National Gallery of Art Christmas ornament makes a perfect gift this season. The arabesque pattern adorning this piece was inspired by Flötner's Moresques and Damasquines, a 16th-century compendium of designs that was instrumental in introducing decorative interlaces to artists and designers throughout Northern Europe.
