Monet: The Japanese Footbridge, Quote Mug

About the Artist

Claude Monet (1840–1926) was an innovative leader of the impressionists, a group of painters who strove to capture the endless variations of light and atmosphere found in nature through plein air landscape painting. Over the course of Monet's career, his technique and vision developed. His art, originally grounded in the realism of direct observation, eventually reflected his interest in rendering an abstract sensation of nature.

This mug features Claude Monet's impressionist masterpiece The Japanese Footbridge (1899) on one side and a quotation from the artist on the other: "The richness I achieve comes from nature, the source of my inspiration."

In 1899, Monet painted 12 works from a single vantage point in his garden at Giverny, focusing on the arching, blue-green bridge and the microcosm of his water garden. Monet designed, built, and shaped the landscape that appears in the painting—from the bridge to the pond, water lilies, and other plantings.
