This selection of postcards from the National Gallery of Art illustrates the longtime fascination of great artists with the unique beauty of the lagoon city of Venice. Canaletto is the best known of the eary view painters, yet Bernardo Bellotto, Francesco Guardi, and many others also responded to the city's striking scenery. In the 19th century J.M.W. Turner turned his considerable talents to depicting the dazzling architecture and shimmering light of Venice. Later, Claude Monet, James McNeill Whistler, and John Singer Sargent brought their distinctly modern sensibilities to rendering the fabled city.
