About the Artist
Born into a wealthy family, Joris Hoefnagel (1542–1600) traveled across Europe in his youth, recording his experiences in topographical drawings that were later used as models for a six-volume atlas. His manuscript illuminations and ornamental designs played an important role in the emergence of floral still-life painting as an independent genre in northern Europe at the end of the 16th century.
