National Gallery of Art 2020 Engagement Calendar

About the Collection

The National Gallery of Art houses one of the world's finest collections of American and European painting, sculpture, and graphic arts from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Presenting the Western Hemisphere's most comprehensive survey of Italian Renaissance art, the holdings include the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci outside Europe. The collections are also rich in French, Spanish, German, Flemish, Dutch, British, and modern and contemporary art. Especially well represented are the 19th-century French impressionists and American painters from colonial times to the current day.

The National Gallery of Art Engagement Calendar is a perennial favorite of art enthusiasts and presents a treasury of works from the collection of one of the finest and most visited museums in the world. The 2020 calendar includes iconic holdings and exciting new acquisitions by George Bellows, William Blake, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Gustav Klimt, Raphael, Auguste Renoir, Auguste Rodin, Sir Peter Paul Rubens, John Singer Sargent, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Joseph Mallord William Turner, and more. Famous paintings from the French impressionism, Italian Renaissance, Dutch Golden Age, and American schools, as well as drawings, photographs, and sculpture are all represented in this annual showcase of the Gallery's collection.

This year's cover image—a detail of Skiffs (1877) by Gustave Caillebotte—depicts rowers zig-zagging across the canvas. Caillebotte adopted the broken brushstrokes of Monet and the bold palette of Renoir, but achieved a much different effect in conveying a sense of movement and progression of time and space. A detail of  Michael Trekur's Pitcher (1935/1942) from the Index of American Design appears on the back cover.
