Edward Hopper 2020 Wall Calendar

About the Artist

Edward Hopper was one of the foremost American realists of the 20th century. In etchings, watercolors, and oil paintings, he portrayed ordinary places—drugstores, apartment houses, and small towns. Both commonplace and mysterious, these haunting images led many to praise him as the most American of painters.

This 2020 wall calendar includes 12 works by American artist Edward Hopper from the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Born and raised in New York, but spending nearly every summer of his prolific career in New England, Hopper produced a body of work that includes somber interiors as well as moody seascapes and shawdow-filled street scenes. His outdoor scenes capture atmosphere in all its incarnations, from early morning light and shadows, to the hot bright white of a summer day, to the fading warmth of sunset. “I like long shadows and early and late sunlight,” Hopper once said. “I am very much interested in light, and particularly sunlight, trying to paint sunlight without eliminating the form under it, if I can.”
