Rothko 2020 Wall Calendar

About the Artist

Mark Rothko (1903–1970), who was central to the development of postwar abstract painting in the United States, is best known for the luminous paintings he made in the 1950s and 1960s. These classic works are characterized by their soft-edged rectangular forms and broad, thin washes of color. The National Gallery of Art is the largest public repository of Rothko's works, with a collection that includes nearly 300 paintings on canvas and paper, and a study collection of more than 600 additional works on paper.

The 12 Rothko paintings featured in this 2020 wall calendar are from the collections of the National Gallery of Art and the Phillips Collection. Mark Rothko, a titan among modern painters, once said that the subjects of his paintings were the extremes of human emotion. His works communicate tragedy and elation through forms reduced to a stark simplicity—oftentimes, a pair of rectangles.
