During the nineteenth century this was a subject of great interest and designers throughout Europe as well as the United States found Jones book a valuable reference in creating patterns and decorative motifs based not only on the more familiar vocabulary of European styles but on early medieval, Asian, and primitive designs. It was Jones goal to improve the artistic taste and knowledge of his generation and the impact of his Grammar of Ornament certainly served that purpose.
