About the Author
Barbara Buhler Lynes was the curator of the George O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe and the Emily Fisher Landau director of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Study Center.
Georgia O’Keeffe’s magnificent landscape paintings, flower studies, still lifes, and abstract compositions are greatly admired, yet the wide range of her subjects, her working methods, and her stylistic development have never been fully explored. This beautiful two-volume catalogue raisonné—which presents more than 2,000 works by O’Keeffe in a variety of media—displays her innovative use of color and form, shedding light on her unique contribution to American modernism.
A key figure in the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, O’Keeffe was at the center of the ferment taking place in American art in the early 20th century. Aware of intellectual and aesthetic currents of the period, she nevertheless developed her own work—beginning with her distinctive drawings and watercolors of 1915 to 1917— in highly personal ways. This catalogue includes O’Keeffe’s paintings, drawings, watercolors, and sculpture, many of which have never been reproduced, along with entries that provide pertinent factual information. The works are arranged chronologically and are enhanced with a full bibliography, exhibitions listing, and chronology of the artist’s life.

“The Georgia O’Keeffe catalogue raisonne is certainly an impressive, even beautiful example of the genre.” —Norbert Lynton, Times Literary Supplement
"The sheer majestic expansiveness that [O'Keeffe] captured so capably is readily apparent. In the 'Sky in the Clouds series . . . readers will appreciate the ease with which O'Keeffe's soft, irregular clouds stretch, float and fade into a soft, enveloping mist. The artist's flowers and skulls are faithfully reproduced here and many are complex and evocative enough to get lost in." —J.A., Washington Post Book World
