The inspiration for this tie derives from an important acquisition in the National Gallery's collection of illustrated rare books, Owen Jones 1856 Grammar of Ornament. This monumental compendium with chromolithographic illustrations of the ornamental motifs of various countries and cultures is one of the most significant and influential publications on the history of ornament. During the nineteenth century this was a subject of great interest and designers throughout Europe as well as the United States found Jones book a valuable reference in creating patterns and decorative motifs based not only on the more familiar vocabulary of European styles but on early medieval, Asian, and primitive designs. It was Jones goal to improve the artistic taste and knowledge of his generation and the impact of his Grammar of Ornament certainly served that purpose.
