Mark Rothko (1903-1970) resisted critical attempts to define his artistic expression. A founding member of the New York School and a key figure in the evolution of abstract painting, Rothko strove to convey powerful emotion without resorting to symbolic imagery.

The fog-edged rectangles of his classic paintings feature subtle yet extraordinary colors, commanding size, and rigorous composition. These works inspire quiet contemplation and generate intimate connections with viewers through their unquestioned originality and enduring beauty. The luminous images reproduced in this folio--executed during the forties, fifties and sixties--are from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

  • Ten 5 x 7 inch full-color blank note cards (5 each of 2 designs) and ten white envelopes.
