About the Artist
William Seltzer Rice (1873–1963) was a talented and prolific watercolorist. He became devoted to block printing because prints better suited the Arts and Crafts ethos of making artwork available to a wide audience at modest cost. Unlike many printmakers, Rice designed, carved, and printed the blocks himself.
This boxed note card set features four block prints by William Seltzer Rice, including Coast Guard (c. 1927), Moonrise—Eucalyptus Grove (1925), Redwood Monarchs (1925), and Hollyhock Garden (1925). Rice drew inspiration from the landscapes of Northern California—from the Sierra Nevada to the Pacific. These cards are printed with soy-based inks on recycled paper.
