About the Artist
The inventive and amusing paintings of Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526–1593) dazzled the courts of Europe. His imaginative combinations of fruits, vegetables, and flowers created allegorical portraits of emperors and witty caricatures of their courtiers, and won him the highest artistic honors bestowed by the Holy Roman Empire. His works reveal the mind of an artist deeply influenced by the new discoveries and new worlds that came to light during the Age of Exploration.
The floral pattern on this stunning scarf was adapted from Italian Mannerist painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo's Spring (1573), one of four works in The Seasons series. Created to celebrate the reign of Emperor Maximilian II, this series demonstrates the style for which Arcimboldo is best known—highly original "portraits" composed out of imaginatively arranged objects, plants, animals, and other elements of nature.
