About the Artist
Albrecht Dürer grew up in an environment of late Gothic courtly grace and religious intensity, yet his world was transformed by new influences in politics, economics and trade, scholarship, and culture. He created paintings as well as designs for decorative arts, and he wrote theoretical treatises on fortification, human proportion, and perspective, but his greatest and most influential works are his drawings, watercolors, engravings, and woodcuts.
This beautiful ornament is based on a woodcut by German artist Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) from the Gallery's collection.
