Description

This 11 x 14–inch print is a reproduction of Thomas Cole's The Voyage of Life: Manhood (1842), the third in his renowned four-part series that traces the journey of an archetypal hero along the "River of Life." From the innocence of childhood, to the overconfidence of youth, through the challenges of middle age, to the hero's triumphant salvation, The Voyage of Life follows the Christian doctrine of death and resurrection. Cole's intrepid voyager also serves as a personification of America during the feverish expansion of Manifest Destiny.
