Vermeer: Girl With a Pearl Earring, Address Book

About the Artist

Elegant, luminous, and serene, the paintings of Johannes Vermeer entrance the eye and calm the spirit. The Dutch Renaissance master's command of light, color, and texture has captivated art enthusiasts for centuries. Early in his career, he seemed to aspire to be a history painter, as his first works were large-scale mythological and religious paintings. He then began to paint the genre scenes, landscapes, and allegories for which he has become so renowned. While Vermeer's subject matter changed in the mid-1650s, he nevertheless continued to imbue his later works with the quiet, intimate moods he preferred in his early history paintings. His paintings of pale beauties in rich costumes, caught in moments of stillness and silence, are among the most loved works in museums worldwide.
