About the Artist
Luca della Robbia (1400–1482) is noted for his glazed terracotta roundels, a technique he developed in the 1430s and 1440s and passed on to his nephew Andrea della Robbia. The glazed coating gave the colors of della Robbia's works a degree of durability impossible for sculpture that was simply painted.
This beautiful, three-dimensional, hand-painted Christmas ornament is based on the relief sculpture Madonna and Child (c. 1475) by Luca della Robbia from the National Gallery of Art collection. The back is printed with "National Gallery of Art, Washington" and the year it was created (2015), making it the perfect holiday keepsake.
