This sculpture is based on a Hellenstic bronze stature of a plump baby Eros, god of love, in a relaxed pose, conveying a sense of the realism, expression, and detail made possible by the bronze medium. The type was popular in Hellenistic and, especially, Roman times. In the Roman period, sleeping Eros statues decorated villa gardens and fountains. Their function in the Hellenistic period is less clear, however, but they were possibly used as dedications within sanctuaries of Aphrodite or erected in public parks or private, even royal, gardens.
