James Castle: Figures Notebook

About the Artist

Self-taught artist James Castle (1899–1977) is known for his draftsmanship and inventive use of common materials such as discarded food containers, mail, and newspapers. Castle’s imagery captures the simple beauty and mystery of ordinary places and things. The recurrent and diverse themes in his work tell an intimate story of a life lived in rural Idaho during the first half of the 20th century. Castle’s work was recognized regionally in the 1950’s and was presented with great acclaim to the New York art community at the 1998 Outsider Art Fair. Museum and gallery exhibitions have since followed every year in the US and internationally.
