Renaissance Maiolica Exhibition Coaster Set

About the Exhibition

Sharing Images: Renaissance Prints into Maiolica and Bronze presents the multifarious influence of Renaissance prints on maiolica and bronze. Inspired by the Gallery's acquisition of the important William A. Clark collection of maiolica (glazed Italian ceramics) from the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and drawing largely on the newly expanded holdings, it offers a vivid introduction to a critical aspect of Renaissance art and the transmission over great distances of time and geography of some of the period's most famous images.

Description

Created on the occasion of the exhibition Sharing Images: Renaissance Prints into Maiolica and Bronze, this set contains six round coasters based on works from the William A. Clark collection. Maiolica is a tin-glazed earthenware that flourished in 15th- and 16th-century Italy and played a key role in Renaissance society. A rich history is preserved in apothecary jars, serving plates, bowls, vases, and other pieces, as these beautiful wares were often painted with scenes from classical mythology, history, or religion and were a testament to their owner's refinement.
