2019 Impressionism Mini Wall Calendar

About the Movement

Excluded from annual Académie des Beaux-Arts exhibitions and disregarded by the press, a group of artists in 1860s Paris began an artistic revolution. Foregoing the historical and mythological scenes favored by the Académie, the impressionists painted plein-air landscapes and views of common people engaged in everyday life. Their colors and brushstrokes ran unbridled, intimately capturing the ever-changing play of light and candid human emotion.

Description

This 2019 miniature wall calendar features a dozen impressionist works from the collection of the National Gallery of Art. Included are paintings by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt, Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet, Alfred Sisley, Paul Gauguin, and Berthe Morisot. Acceptance did not come easy for the impressionists. They rejected the strict techniques and conservative themes preffered by the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and instead favored plein-air landscapes, domestic scenes, natural light, and unbridled colors and brushstrokes. Their movement became defined by its vivacity and emphasis on ephemeral beauty.
