This 11 × 14–inch print is a reproduction of Henri Matisse's 1905 painting Open Window, Collioure. An icon of early modernism, this small but explosive work is celebrated as one of the most important early paintings of the fauve school, which emerged in 1904. Pioneered by a group of artists including André Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, and Georges Braque, fauve paintings are distinguished by a startling palette of saturated, unmixed colors and broad brushstrokes. While the paintings evoke spontaneity, they are a calculated assimilation of techniques from postimpressionism and neo-impressionism. Open Window-which Matisse painted in Collioure, a small town on the Mediterranean coast of France where he traveled with Derain in the summer of 1905- represents the very inception of fauvism in Matisse's art.
